Rainout & Field Safety Policy

1. Field Closure Determination

City/County Fields: If the city or county parks department (e.g., Evergreen or Meadowdale Athletic Complex) closes fields via their official rainout hotlines, all PLL games and practices are strictly canceled for the remainder of the day. [cite: 3]

Lynndale Playfields: Safety measures focus on player safety (slipping, lightning), field preservation (preventing mud and turf damage), and efficient water removal to allow for a quick return to play. [cite: 4]

  • Reviewers: Vice Presidents, President, Safety Officer, & Player Agents. [cite: 5]
  • Notification: Posted on Facebook & via GameChanger. [cite: 6]
  • Staff Alerts: Snack Shack Management, Scheduler, UICs, & Webmaster will be notified no later than 3 PM. [cite: 7]
  • Team Alerts: Baseball & Softball Leadership will notify managers/coaches of impacted teams; field reviewers will send a league-wide email. [cite: 8, 9]

School Fields: If no city-wide closure is in effect, the decision to play rests on a safety inspection by the home team Manager or coach. [cite: 10] They will look for standing water, conditions causing player injury (e.g., sinking cleats), or significant field damage. [cite: 11]

2. Game-Time Authority

Once a game begins, the Chief Umpire (or Lead Umpire) has the final authority to suspend or stop play. [cite: 12, 13] Additionally, play may end early if both managers agree the weather has become unsuitable for players. [cite: 14]

3. Weather & Safety Protocols

  • Lightning Policy: Stop play immediately upon seeing lightning or hearing thunder. [cite: 17] Per Little League rules, a 30-minute waiting period is required after the last occurrence of lightning or thunder before play resumes. [cite: 18]
  • Field Preservation: Games must be canceled if continued play will cause damage requiring expensive or extensive repairs. [cite: 19]

4. Communication

  • Alerts: Status changes are posted via GameChanger and sent through email alerts. [cite: 20, 21]
  • Hierarchy: Check the official app/website first, followed by communication from your Team Manager. [cite: 22]
